Cataracts Q & A

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a common eye problem that develops due to protein build up in your eye’s lens. The proteins prevent light from passing through the lens properly, making your vision cloudy, and in time you can lose some of your sight.

Cataracts can form as a result of the aging process, but babies can have a genetic predisposition that causes them to be born with cataracts, or they can develop cataracts during childhood.

Cataracts can also form after a traumatic eye injury or as a result of some medical conditions, such as diabetes. External causes of cataracts include:

  • Toxic substances
  • Ultraviolet light
  • Radiation
  • Corticosteroid medication
  • Frequent use of diuretics

You’re also at a higher risk of developing cataracts if you smoke or are a heavy drinker.

What are the symptoms of cataracts?

In most cases, cataracts develop slowly, so you might not be aware of any problems at first. As cataracts increase in size and begin to block out more light from the lens in your eye, you’ll start to notice symptoms like:

  • Cloudy, blurry, foggy, or filmy vision
  • Increased near-sightedness
  • Alterations in color perception
  • Trouble coping with glare from the sun or vehicle headlights
  • Double vision
  • Glasses and contact lenses losing their effectiveness

You should visit ReVision Optix if you have any of these symptoms so your optometrist can check your eyes.

What treatments are available for cataracts?

In some cases, new prescription glasses or contact lenses can compensate for the effect of cataracts. If your vision isn’t likely to respond to corrective lenses, then cataract surgery is the proven solution to the problem.

Cataract surgery is a straightforward outpatient procedure that involves an eye surgeon removing the lens that has a cataract and replacing it with a synthetic lens. Cataract surgery is highly successful, and the vast majority of patients who undergo surgery regain clearer vision afterward.

Your optometrists at ReVision Optix refer their cataract patients to a team of surgeons with whom they work closely. That way they can ensure you receive the best care and the most favorable results from your cataract surgery, while all your pre- and post-op care takes place at ReVision Optix.
